Letterhead

For my final project, I decided to keep the letterhead, business card, and brochure rather simple. I used a similar layout throughout in order to keep the three unified. I did this by putting the same pink and silver lines on the sides of all three. In order to ensure that the colors were correct, I used the eyedropper tool and selected the colors from my logo. Next, I made sure that all of the headings were in the same font as my original logo (Dorchester Script MT Std). One thing that I had a lot of trouble with was getting the bleed to work. Every time that I printed the three parts of my corporate identity, part of the pink line would get cut off. However, overall I am proud of my work and I think that the simplicity of it all makes it look elegant.

Brochure Mock Up/Sketch

For my brochure mock up, I decided to base it off of one of the designs that I used for my business card and letterhead. I kept it pretty simple for the sketch, but the actual brochure will have a lot more detail and color. There will be a lot of real pictures and full descriptions of my company's services and products.

Questionnaire

1)   What is your business?
My company, "With Love...," is similar to the store Things Remembered. Basically, what we do is personalize gifts and items for our customers. We monogram items, as well as put personal messages or photos onto them.

2)   Describe your business in one sentence.
We customize items, gifts, and clothing with personal messages and photos.

3)   Who is your target audience?
Our target audience is essentially everyone. Our services will be available for anyone who needs something customized or personalized.

4)   Who are your competitors?
Things Remembered and the Embroidery Shop.

5)   What makes them better/worse than your product/service?
Things Remembered has a pretty limited selection when it comes to clothing and blankets. For my company, I really want to emphasize personalized clothing. I also want to have a bigger selection of jewelry and gifts for men. Also, the Embroidery Shop is only clothing and cups/mugs. Basically, I want to combine the two shops into one, better shop.

6)   Do you currently have an identity?
No, this is a new company.

7)   What do you like about it and what don’t you like about it?
N/A

These following questions might seem silly, but their purpose is to help generate ideas.
1)   How do you want your image to be seen in two years?
We want this company to be seen as a reliable company with high-quality products. We want our costumers to trust that we will always finish their engravings in a timely manner.

2)   If your company was an animal, what animal would it be and why?
If my company was an animal, it would be a bear cub. People associate teddy bears with love and comfort, which is exactly what we want our customers to feel when they receive their finished product(s).

3)   If your company/brand was a person, who would it be and why?
If my company was a person, it would be someone who really cares about giving back and giving to others. A good example of someone like this would be Oprah.

4)   If your company/brand was an object, what would it be?
A heart.

5)   If your customer was a cartoon character, who would it be?
If my customer was a cartoon character, it would be Dory from Finding Nemo because she was kind-hearted and good. She would definitely be interested in buying our products because they express love.

Lyrical Collage

For my lyrical collage, I chose to use a line from the first verse of the song "Atlas Hands" by Benjamin Francis Leftwich. I started out with a simple picture of the sky and water that I got off of Google. Next, I opened a new file with a picture of a dock. I used the magnetic lasso tool to trace it, and then moved it onto the original picture of the water. I then used the patch tool to fix any mistakes that I made when tracing it. After that, I opened a third file with a picture of a boy jumping into water. I again used the magnetic lasso tool to trace him, and then I moved him onto the original picture. I adjusted the brightness/contrast of him because he was slightly too dark for the background. Then, I found a picture of a pirate ship and again traced it. I moved it onto the new file, and then adjusted the brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation to make it fit in with the background better. I then used the blur tool to make it appear as though it was actually in the water. Finally, I used the text tool to type the words to the verse. I adjusted the font, color, and size so that it was visible. When I attached the jpg picture, it got rather small but the real detail can be seen in the original photoshop file which will be on the student server. These are the original images I used:

Custom Graphic

For my custom graphic project, I decided to do another beach scene. First, I started out making the sand. I changed the background and foreground colors to ones that resembled sand, and then applied the clouds filter. After that, I added noise to the layer. I then began working on a new layer, again using the clouds filter to give it the effect that I wanted. Finally, I applied a radial blur, as well as the Bas Relief effect to give it the final touches. This created a perfect depiction of sand. Next, I found a picture of waves on the Internet. I opened up a new file and used the magnetic lasso tool to trace the water and move it onto the original file with the sand background. I altered the colors and opacity in order to make it look as if the sand was showing through the waves. I did the same with the two starfish in the bottom right hand corner. Finally, I used the mixer brush tool to make the grass. I chose the "Dune Grass" option, and altered how much they scattered and the size that I wanted them to be. I used the "Flip X" option to make the blades of grass go in different directions. The last thing that I did to complete the graphic was use the preset dune grass brush tool to go over my original strokes; This made some appear closer and smaller, while others appeared larger and farther away. These are the two pictures I used to make the waves and the starfish:

I learned how to create the realistic sand effect through this tutorial:

Self Insertion

Original Pictures:

Self Insertion:

For my project, I decided to put myself in Greece because that is my dream vacation spot.  I chose a picture of me that had similar lighting to the destination picture, and that shared a similar color scheme. First, I used the magnetic lasso tool to trace the shape of my body. I then selected the photo and dragged it onto the picture of Santorini. Finally, I adjusted the shape so that I look like I belong in the picture. The one thing that I had trouble with was how the picture of me got blurry every time that I resized it. I tried to adjust it numerous different ways, and every single time the photo got a little bit blurry. Overall, I enjoyed this project and think that it was interesting to learn how to use photoshop.

Vector Illustration

For my vector illustration, I chose to use a picture of a beach scene because the beach is my favorite place. I started out just using the pen tool to trace the major shapes, and then used the pencil tool for some of the more flexible shapes. I used the eyedropper tool to make some of the colors match the original photograph, while other colors I chose by myself. I had some trouble when it came to showing texture in the shapes. Below is the original photo that I used for my illustration:

Exquisite Corpse

For my exquisite corpse, I used the second picture option. I made the character an athlete flying in the sky because of his wings. This was very time consuming and over all, I'm happy with my illustration.

Final Logo

For my logo, I chose to keep it very simple. I used a silver, cursive font in order to give my company an elegant feel, while still making it appear personal like a signature at the end of a card. I used the gradient tool to give the words some shine. I wanted to make the heart look a little different than a basic one, in order to give my logo an easily recognizable icon. I used the paintbrush tool to paint the two halves and then made it a pale pink color. I played around with the stroke styles and width so that the style of the heart matched the font a little more. I wanted to make so that both the heart and the words could stand alone separately on some of our products, and people would still recognize the logo.

Caligramme

For my caligramme, I chose to do a picture of a breast cancer ribbon because it is breast cancer awareness month. I made it pink and used many related phrases for the words. Although I tried my best, I had a lot of trouble with this assignment. For some reason I'm having difficulty understanding how Illustrator works. This is the best that I could do but I will continue practicing.

Logo Critiques

1. Hyundai - I think that this logo implies a very futuristic company. The silver, 3D design makes for a very slick, luxurious logo. I think that it is a successful logo because all of their cars are equally as sleek as the logo itself. It definitely represents their products accurately.

2. Gucci - I think that the simplicity of this logo makes it very successful. The all caps, black font implies a high-end, luxurious company. The two G's are easily recognizable and definitely help define the company.

3. Corona - I think that this logo successfully defines the beer that the company makes. Corona is known as a refreshing, beach beer that people drink with a lime. The blue and yellow colors definitely give the logo a beachy feel. The font is also unique so it is easily recognizable.

4. Chick-fil-a - The outline of a chicken in the 'C' of this logo makes this design very self-explanatory. It is immediately understood through the name of the company, as well as through the logo, that this is a company that sells chicken. I think this logo is successful because of those reasons, and also because the red font makes it stand out and makes it easily recognizable.

5. Walt Disney Pictures - I think that this is logo is extremely successful. The blue color and the outline of the castle in the background make for an easy parallel to Cinderella's castle in Disney World. The font of 'Walt Disney' makes this one of the most easily recognizable logos in the world. It automatically brings to mind Mickey Mouse, Disney World, and all of the movies and TV shows made by this company.

Logo Ideas

1. Traci's Trattoria - This would be an Italian restaurant named after my grandparents'. I would make the logo in either deep red or forest green, and write it in elegant cursive. I would put a little picture of spaghetti and meatballs because that is what my grandparents' are known for.

2. With Love - This would be a store similar to Things Remembered, where people could get all of the items in the store personalized to give to others as gifts. The words would be written in silver, and there would be the outline of a light pink heart behind them.

3. Zen Nails - This would be a nail salon aimed at creating the ultimate relaxing spa experience. The logo would be either light blue or light green, and it would be in a very simple font.

4. AK Jewelry - This would be a jewelry store that ranges from expensive, high-end accessories, to affordable, casual ones. The logo would be in black and gold to show elegance, and it would be in a simple font such as Times New Roman.

5. Aqua - This would be a bathing suit store for both men and women. It would also have sunglasses, sandals, and some coverups and other clothing items. The logo would be in a bright blue color, most likely with a wave or surf board somewhere behind it.

ASCII Project

For my project, I decided to do a picture of a sunrise. I got the idea when I was messing around with colors for the background and found the ones seen in my picture. I used a linear gradient to set the tone of my picture. I made a circle for the sun, and put in multiple rays shining out of it. I had some difficulty with the sun rays because it was taking me extremely long to get the coordinates right for each individual line. However, once I had finished the sun, I was able to move on to the cloud. I used a combination of multiple different curves to make the cloud perfect. After that, I decided to make some birds flying in front of the sunrise. For these, I used quadratic curves. Again, I had some trouble getting the coordinates right to make the birds truly look like they were flying. Finally, I put some green grass at the bottom of the picture. I think that my picture is successful because you can easily recognize what it is a picture of, and the bright, happy colors set a relaxing tone.

Assignment 1

My name is Alyssa Koslowske and I'm currently a sophomore at the University of Tampa. I'm from Ewing, New Jersey. I'm one of five children and I spend most of my free time shopping, tanning, or going out to eat. At home, I work at a steakhouse called KC Prime. However, while I'm at school I work at the Barnes and Noble on campus. I'm an Advertising and Public Relations major, although I'm still deciding what exactly I want to do with my life. I'm really excited about this digital arts class because I think it will give me a good idea of what types of things interest me. I look forward to learning more about HTML and how to design pictures, and everything else that is involved in digital arts.
